The helix consists of colored beads and motor that are mutually threaded with thin shafts. When the engine is started, the system starts rotating and after a while it takes the form of a spiral. In this arrangement, the beads standing in sequence at the ends of the device symbolize the bases in DNA, and the shape taken by the device symbolizes the DNA helix. Wave motion is also observed.
